The VWDB/VJC is participating on a new pilot project called R.I.I.S.E – Regional Immediate Intervention Services for Employment to work with the homeless population at Glendale, Burbank and surrounding areas. Funds for the program come from LA County. The VWDB/VJC is partnered with the parks maintenance section, GYA and the Glendale homeless programs to provide work experience for 13 homeless individuals. This is a short term program, that will end June 30th, 2018.

GLENDALE, CA (October 30, 2017) – The City of Glendale’s Community Services and Parks Department’s (CSP), Workforce Development Section has been awarded $100,000 by the Los Angeles County Workforce Development, Aging, and Community Services Department to train and transition adults who are homeless into gainful employment. The funds are awarded from the Measure H bill approved by voters to develop strategies and provide services to individuals who are homeless. “Approved Strategies to Combat Homelessness,” was drafted by the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative and approved by the County Board of Supervisors on February 9, 2016. The goal of The Uniquely Abled Project is to shift the paradigm of thinking from “disabled” to “uniquely abled”. It starts by preparing people with high functioning autism to take on high performing jobs in the workplace through an innovative job-training program appropriately called, The Uniquely Abled Academy.
Students with Autism thrive in the world of CNC Machining. What many see as a Disadvantage is actually an Advantage for the students of “Uniquely Abled”, a CNC Machining Program located at Glendale Community College. Glendale Community College (GCC) will be hosting Vocational ESL (English as a Second Language) level 3 at the VJC starting Monday August 28, 2017and running for one semester to mid-December.
The classes will be from 8:30am – 12:00pm Monday – Thursday in Room A.
Interested clients will need to take a placement test at GCC. They can contact Naomi Sato at (818) 240-1000 ext. 5033 for the placement test or any other information before 8/28 start date. After 8/28/17 candidates can enroll and test for the classes at the VJC with Naomi. This is an open entry – open exit program and they can be registered by the teacher on the spot.
