Women in Business Legislative Update & Awards Luncheon, Dec 4, 2018
Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) will hold the 2018 Women in Business Legislative Update & Awards Luncheon on December 4, 2018 at the Castaway in Burbank. His office is accepting nominations for this year’s honorees.
The Women in Business Legislative Update & Awards Luncheon was started by former State Senator Jack Scott while he served in the State Assembly and it has been an annual event passed down through State Legislators. The Women in Business Awards honor local women whose exceptional abilities have contributed to the economic vitality and diversity of the 25th Senate District.Women in Business celebrate women who have contributed to the greater good of the workforce through the advancement of business and the proliferation of new jobs while serving as role models for their community and co-workers.
This year’s luncheon will proudly feature an amazing keynote speaker Dee Dee Myers, Executive Vice President of World Wide Corporate Communication and Public Affairs for Warner Brothers. Ms. Myers was the first woman to be the White House Press Secretary in our nation’s history.
Attached you will find a nomination form and the nomination categories for this year’s event. Nominees must live or work in the 25th Senate District. Nomination forms are due by Thursday, November 1, 2018. We look forward to receiving your nomination(s) and seeing you at this year’s luncheon!

GRIT is out and about in our Glendale Business Community

The Glendale Relationship Initiation Team (GRIT) visited science and engineering consulting firm Karagozian & Case to thank them for maintaining their business in Glendale, and to offer them services the City of Glendale may be able to provide.
GRIT has been meeting with businesses and is trying to address their individual needs. Some businesses have expressed concern about parking fees while others have asked for assistance with hiring the right talent. The team has been tasked to assist the businesses by providing resources for their needs. It has also provided employee recruitment events for local companies and helped companies with navigating the world of city codes and ordinances. VWDB and VJC staff discuss free financial incentives they have available for companies that need to retrain employees in order to retain them, on-the-job training subsidies for new employees, as well as individualized recruitment assistance and customized recruitment events they can produce for a local business.
Karagozian & Case established their business in 1945. It is an internationally recognized science and engineering consulting firm that supports a broad range of clients across different sections of defense, transportation, manufacturing, aerospace, energy, and construction industries – for technically challenging and complex problems.
K&C’s scientific and engineering services mainly fall into the following functional areas of expertise:

– Generating innovative and cost-effective structural and mechanical designs to mitigate hazards.

Glendale College to Host Vocational ESL at the VJC Aug. 28, 2017
Glendale Community College (GCC) will be hosting Vocational ESL (English as a Second Language) level 3 at the VJC starting Monday August 28, 2017and running for one semester to mid-December.
The classes will be from 8:30am – 12:00pm Monday – Thursday in Room A.
Interested clients will need to take a placement test at GCC. They can contact Naomi Sato at (818) 240-1000 ext. 5033 for the placement test or any other information before 8/28 start date. After 8/28/17 candidates can enroll and test for the classes at the VJC with Naomi. This is an open entry – open exit program and they can be registered by the teacher on the spot.
The VWDB’s VJC Job Fair Participation, Jan-June 2017
So far in 2017, Verdugo Job Center staff have participated in the City of Glendale’s resource street fair for the senior citizen’s called Senior Street Fair – and, on two occasions, in the Glendale adult school’s Garfield campus Resource Fairs.
